The Magic City is now an Opportunity Zone

March 3, 2022

As 2022 blazes forward, it seems as if new developments and architectural projects are popping up every day in Birmingham. Just last year, the new Protective Stadium opened and solidified The Magic City’s position as the go-to spot for all things sports and entertainment. This is great news for architects, as it opens the door for a wide variety of new projects and opportunities. From new apartment complexes to shopping centers and urban areas, we’ve gathered up some of the most exciting projects coming to Birmingham in the upcoming months.

Apartment Complexes

There are several exciting new apartment complexes coming to Birmingham in 2022. While some are entirely new projects, others are redevelopments of structures that have existed in the city for decades. The Artisan Flats is a new development that will serve as a multi-family housing center with 120 apartment units. Located in the bustling area of Lakeview, the complex will offer residents the unique opportunity to live within one of Birmingham’s most popular areas. Restoration Capital Partners, LLC, is working on a $40 million renovation to the 12-story Building Trades Tower. The project will transform the once dilapidated building into a housing complex with 242 studio and one-bedroom apartments, as well as amenity space on the ground floor that includes a Starbucks. The Tramont is a high-end housing development that will be located in Highland-Redmont Park, offering one-to-three bedroom luxury condominiums.

Mixed Use Centers

From The Hardwick to the new Southtown Court, mixed use centers coming in 2022 will bring numerous opportunities to the Birmingham area. The Hardwick was a once empty, historic building that is being transformed into a renovated space that will bring restaurants, stores and workspaces to the area along the Rotary Trail. Work on the new Southtown Court will begin once demolition of the old housing development is complete — it will include over 400 housing units and space for grocery stores and other retail ventures.

Retail and Restaurant Developments

More restaurants and more stores are headed to the Birmingham community. Mercantile on Morris is one such project that will bring not only residential units, but also retail and restaurant businesses to downtown. The much loved Market at Pepper Place is getting a major revamp soon, too. Groundbreaking will begin this year, and the updates should be completed by 2023. Beer fans will be excited by the opening of the new Ghost Train Brewing Co. location, which will include a music venue, formal event space and a larger taproom.

From housing units to shopping centers, new developments are popping up all over Birmingham with increasing speed. These projects will bring jobs, opportunities and higher quality of living for city residents, and we can’t wait to watch them unfold in the coming years.
